Cowboy Action Shooting, a sport created in California in 1982, is run under international rules set be 'The Single Action Shooting Society' of the USA.

Cowboy Action Shooting recreates life in the Wild West by Shooting a course of fire designed to depict an old west historical shootout, a movie scene or just someone's idea of the wild west.

Various target set-ups are made to resemble a western scene and scores are made according to elapsed time and accuracy in hitting the targets. There is a penalty of five seconds added to your elapsed time for each missed shot, and failure to shoot and move through the stage in the specified order will also cause a time penalty. The winning shooter will have a combination of the lower elapsed time and the most hits in the correct order. There is no advantage to missing fast. A shot timer automatically records your total time at your last shot.

To add to this fantasy sport, all shooters are required to wear some form of period dress. Long pants (or dresses for the ladies), boots, Cowboy hat and shirts with long sleeves will do. For firearms you will need two single action revolvers, a lever action or pump action Rifle (in Pistol cal) and a side-by-side Shotgun (without ejectors) or a model 1897-pump action Shotgun (with exposed hammer). Guns must be of pre 1900 design but modern versions like Ruger, Colt clones and Norinco 97's are acceptable. You will also need holsters and a carrier or belt for shot shells. All bullets are lead and have maximum velocity requirements.

The RRGC Cowboys shoot on the 2nd Saturday of each month on Range 6 from 10am to 2 pm.

To participate you must hold a current firearms licence. To watch, you need eye and hearing protection.

This used to be a very strong section of the Club and organised trips away and had several competitions.  We would like to get it up and running again as not only is Fishing fun and relaxing but you can usually eat what you catch if you wish.

If you are interested please email the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let them know what you can assist with and what you like to catch.

For now we do offer Trophies at the AGM for photos of your catch.  Also if you want to share your fishy tails then send them in and they may appear on this site or in the Newsletter.

As our section name suggests we shoot older style firearms which use Black Powder as a propellant. This powder is usually only encountered now in fire works, but has hundreds of years of history behind it , and is characterized by its smell and copious amounts of smoke.

The sport can be very competitive at whatever level you wish to go for and is hugely popular in many parts of the World, particularly Europe and the U.S.A.

New Zealand has had great success in International Competitions over the years in Rifle, Shotgun and Pistol events.

At the RR&GC we shoot twice monthly, on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, on No.2 Range, using muzzle loading rifles, Black Powder cartridge rifles and shotguns.

Although we do have some section competitions and other Annual events, feel free to come along and join in with whatever Black Powder firearm you have. Be assured you will get any help that you need and pick up heaps of knowledge.

If you are new to the sport it would probably be to your advantage to come and have a chat with us before even buying a firearm and accessories.

For further information please contact Scott on 027 4909 504.

The range is open from 08:30 to approximately 12pm depending on member involvement, for all archers seeking to shoot or after coaching from one of three coaches. Set up your gear and arrange the shooting line as is appropriate for the day.

The range covers distances from 10m all the way up to 90m. Progression through the distances is achieved by getting a score of over 400 points out of 600 at any given distance for the initial stages.

Currently accepting all bow types on the range - recurve(sighted/barebow), compound, longbow, and now crossbow given you have your own crossbow.

Friendly competition is welcomed and fun competition days can be arranged upon interest from members.
